Chapter Fifteen
AFTER RUNNING AWAY FROM Mykeya, Darian had found himself at a loss as to where to go.
His feet carried him halfway back to the Observatory tower before it occurred to him that, once Mykeya gathered herself, his usual perch would be the first place she'd look for him.
And she would look for him. Eventually.
She might let it go for the time being.
But not forever.
Mykeya was much too tenacious to politely forget Darian spilling his pain and secrets at her feet. If nothing else, she'd want to discuss and strategize the curse's effects on the current negotiations with Tolion.
Which was the last thing Darian wanted to do. So he needed to find somewhere to discreetly hide and tend to his wounded pride.
Unfortunately, the whole fortress was crawling now with people.
His, hers, and Tolion's.
The only other relatively quiet place he could think of was the balcony on the east wing.
Unfortunately, Mykeya knew about that, too.
With a reluctant sigh, he accepted there was nowhere to hide and continued up to the tower. At least Darian could lock the door and pretend not to be there if anyone knocked.
He found a great deal of grim satisfaction in turning the key when he finally reached the Star Room. It was the only one to this particular lock, which meant not even Kummel could get to him there.
Darian tested the door once to be absolutely certain. When it didn't give in the slightest, he slipped the key back into his waistcoat pocket and took up his usual spot on the window seat.
The endless view of the bright morning sky stretched out in front of him, but Darian didn't notice a single one of the clouds drifting in the brilliant blue expanse. He was too busy brooding over the unfairness of the curse and falling into the familiar melancholy pit of self-pity and self-recriminations.
No matter how long he brooded or how he twisted and turned the situation, Darian could not think of a way to take back what he'd said to Mykeya. Could find no way to rearrange and finagle the truth that might convince her that she'd misheard him.
The morning crept on as his thoughts continued to spiral uselessly.
With time ticking away, he was down to minutes before the early gathering was set to begin. And Darian still had no idea what he'd say to Mykeya when he saw her.
No idea how to even look her in the eye.
He was contemplating skipping the meeting altogether until he got himself together when the soft click of nails on wood pulled him from his useless contemplation.
Darian's attention snapped to the strange contraption at the center of the room and zeroed in on Cat. The black and white feline stretched lazily beneath the device as if waking up from a long, satisfying nap.
"You again. How do you keep getting in here?"
He glared at the irritating animal until the words of Islyne's letter popped into his mind. His attention turned more thoughtful, and he leaned forward to consider the cat.
